SINGAPORE – You have a great movie project about how a rock star’s music turned a super fan’s life around. But it would never get off the ground unless you get the star’s permission to use his music. So how do you reach out to a legend like Bruce Springsteen and not have him think you are just another obsessive fan, or worse, stalker?

You could try grabbing him as he walked past, as British-Indian film-maker Gurinder Chadha did in 2010. The Boss – to use Springsteen’s nickname – was in London for the release of the documentary The Promise, featuring the singer-songwriter recording the compilation album of the same name.
