Singapore’s Best Employers 2020, a ranking of the 150 most attractive firms and institutions, reveals what makes a company attractive to its workers. Based on the results of a new survey by The Straits Times and global research company Statista, the ranking shows retailers Uniqlo and Adidas Singapore coming in first and second, followed by technology giants Google and Amazon, and oil and gas company BP rounding up the top five. The ranking, based on an online survey that drew more than 8,000 responses, involved a foolproof test: Would staff recommend the company to a friend or family member?
The survey results confirm the notion that attractive employers are distinguished by their capacity to care for staff and invest in their long-term future in the company. Singaporean employees, much like their counterparts elsewhere, are motivated primarily by compensation packages and benefits, and they are mature enough to expect only what their education and skills can command realistically on the market. Yet, that expectation is just the beginning of employees’ engagement with employers.
