SINGAPORE – Fables form the core of two recent books by Singaporean authors, who weave tales of magic out of history and folklore from the region.

Embedded in the enchantment is a deeper purpose. Teacher Kenneth Chan, who on Sunday published his collection Chrita-Chrita Baba, hopes fairy tales can reignite interest in the vanishing vernacular of Baba Malay, which is spoken by the Peranakan Chinese.
